What is the best way to install insulation around electrical features, plumbing and air ducts?

When insulating around electrical features or other objects, use caution and take into consideration the specific function of each object, its components and uses. Below are some additional considerations for insulating around a few common objects in the home.

Wiring – When wiring exists in the cavities that are being insulated, simply split the insulation so that it is placed around the wire on both sides, allowing the wire to be comfortably nested inside the insulation.

Heat – If the object gives off heat, do not cover it or make contact with insulation unless the object is clearly rated with an IC rating (“Type IC”), which will be made readily apparent on the fixture.

Plumbing – Place insulation between the pipe and exterior wall. If needed, compress the insulation so that it easily slides between the pipes and the wall, but never place the insulation over the pipes. An easy way to ensure correct installment is to ensure the pipes are still visible.
