Insulation systems, like all mechanical systems, require periodic inspection and maintenance to monitor changes or damage that can render them ineffective. At a minimum, insulation should be inspected annually, which should include checking for signs of cracking, distortion, damage, corrosion or evidence of hot spots on high-temperature systems.
The risks of deferring proper maintenance have been catalogued in the NIA’s Insulation Outlook magazine, and the list of potential issues includes development of mold, mildew or corrosion, loss of production or process quality, and compromising personnel safety. The magazine also provides a handy, 16-item maintenance check list, which can be used to spur investigation of what needs further attention.
