Q:  Why is the R-value per inch of polyisocyanurate foam so much greater than fiber glass?

A:  Fiber glass relies on entrapped air to provide insulation through the vast number of tiny spaces created by the fibers. Polyisocyanurate foam is composed of tiny cells containing a trapped gas that has a much lower thermal conductivity than air (i.e. better thermal resistance, R-value).
