Q: Do JM duct insulations comply with ICBO requirements?
A: The Uniform Building Code and the Uniform Mechanical Code, written by ICBO (International Conference of Building Officials) is generally used in the north central and western part of the US.
When used for their intended purpose and when selected so that the R value requirements are met, Johns Manville duct insulation products comply with the requirements of the Uniform Mechanical Code. The following are the major requirements from the 1997 Uniform Mechanical Code:
Duct Board:
UL 181 class 0 or 1, labeled with UL 181 and class.
Must be labeled with manufacturer, R-value at installed thickness, flame spread and smoke ratings.
Duct wrap:
Flame spread rating of 25 or less, and smoke developed rating of 50 or less as a composite. ( < or = 50/100 OK for single dwelling unit)
Must be labeled with manufacturer, R-value at installed thickness, flame and smoke ratings.
Duct liner:
Flame spread rating of 25 or less, and smoke developed rating of 50 or less as a composite.
Must have mold, humidity and air erosion resistance properties of UL 181.
